How the deadline is set

Returns for calendar-year taxpayers are due on April 15. When April 15 falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. Emancipation Day in Washington, D.C. (April 16, observed on the nearest weekday) counts as such a holiday, so a weekend can push the deadline to April 17 or 18 — as on April 18, 2022 and April 18, 2023, and next on April 18, 2028 and April 17, 2029.

Residents of Maine and Massachusetts get extra time when the deadline falls on Patriots' Day, the third Monday of April: they had until April 17, 2019, April 19, 2022 and April 17, 2024, and will next have until April 17, 2030.

History and postponements

After the 16th Amendment was ratified in 1913, the first income tax returns were due on March 1, 1914. The Revenue Act of 1918 moved the deadline to March 15, and the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 moved it to April 15, starting in 1955.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic the IRS postponed the 2020 filing and payment deadline to July 15, 2020, and the 2021 deadline for individuals to May 17, 2021 (estimated tax payments were still due April 15, 2021). The IRS also postpones deadlines for taxpayers in federally declared disaster areas — for example, to October 15, 2025, for Los Angeles County after the January 2025 wildfires.

Frequently asked questions

When is Tax Day 2028?

Tax Day 2028 is on Tuesday, April 18, 2028.

When is the tax extension deadline?

Form 4868, filed by Tax Day, gives an automatic six-month extension to file: to October 15, or the next business day when that is a weekend. For 2026 returns the extended deadline is Friday, October 15, 2027.

Does a tax extension give more time to pay?

No. Form 4868 extends only the time to file. Tax owed is due by the April deadline, and interest and penalties apply to late payments.

Is Tax Day a holiday?

No. It is a filing deadline, not a day off; government offices, banks and post offices are open.
