How dates are calculated

No date on this site is typed by hand. Every calendar is generated from the Gregorian calendar rules, and every holiday from the rule that defines it — for example, Thanksgiving as the fourth Thursday in November, or Memorial Day as the last Monday in May.

  • US federal holidays follow 5 U.S.C. 6103 and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management's observed-date rule (a Saturday holiday is observed on Friday, a Sunday holiday on Monday). Historical rules are applied for earlier years, such as the fixed dates used before the Uniform Monday Holiday Act took effect in 1971 and Juneteenth from 2021.
  • Easter uses the Gregorian computus; Jewish holidays use the arithmetic Hebrew calendar.
  • Moon phases, equinoxes and solstices are computed with the algorithms in Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, accurate to about a minute.
  • Week numbers follow ISO 8601 (weeks start on Monday; week 1 contains the year's first Thursday).
  • UK, Canadian and Australian holidays follow the published rules of each government, including substitute days.

Dates far in the future follow today's rules. Governments occasionally add one-off holidays or change rules, so for payroll, legal or travel decisions confirm dates with the issuing authority.

Who makes this site

YearlyCalendar.org is written, built and maintained by the YearlyCalendar.org team. We check every rule against the issuing authority (OPM, IRS, the Federal Reserve, NYSE, gov.uk, the Government of Canada and Australian state governments) and re-check pages when rules change.
