Eclipses in 2030
2030 has 2 solar and 2 lunar eclipses. Solar eclipses happen only at new moon and lunar eclipses only at full moon. A lunar eclipse can be seen from anywhere the Moon is above the horizon; a total or annular solar eclipse only from a narrow path, with a partial eclipse around it. A penumbral lunar eclipse only slightly dims the Moon and is easy to miss.
| Date (ET) | Eclipse | Greatest eclipse | Visible from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annular solar eclipse | 2:28 AM EDT (06:28 UTC) | Europe, northern Africa, Middle East, Asia, Arctic, Alaska; annular in Algeria, Tunisia, Greece, Turkey, Russia, northern China and Japan | |
| Partial lunar eclipse (Strawberry Moon) | 2:33 PM EDT (18:33 UTC) | Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia | |
| Total solar eclipse | 1:50 AM EST (06:50 UTC) | Southern Africa, southern Indian Ocean, East Indies, Australia, Antarctica; total in Botswana, South Africa and Australia | |
| Penumbral lunar eclipse (Cold Moon) | 5:28 PM EST (22:28 UTC) | Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia |

Time zones: full moons in Pacific Time and UTC
All times on this page are US Eastern Time (EST in winter, EDT from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November). A moon phase happens at the same instant everywhere on Earth, but the clock time and sometimes the date depend on your time zone: a phase shortly before midnight Eastern is already the next day in UTC and in Europe, and one shortly after midnight is still the previous evening on the US West Coast. Blue moons depend on the time zone for the same reason.
In 2030, these 3 full moons fall on a different date in UTC than in Eastern Time: Pink Moon (Apr 17 ET, Apr 18 UTC); Buck Moon (Jul 14 ET, Jul 15 UTC); Beaver Moon (Nov 9 ET, Nov 10 UTC).

Full moon names explained
The full moon names used here are folk names from North America. The Old Farmer's Almanac, which popularized them, traces them to Native American (largely Algonquian), colonial American and European traditions; different Native American nations used different names. Each name is tied to the calendar month in which the full moon falls, except for three special cases:
- Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox. It usually falls in September; when it falls in October, the September full moon is called the Corn Moon.
- Hunter's Moon is the full moon after the Harvest Moon.
- Blue moon here means the second full moon in one calendar month. An older rule from the Maine Farmers' Almanac calls the third full moon of an astronomical season that has four a blue moon (a seasonal blue moon); the calendar-month meaning spread after a 1946 Sky & Telescope article.
What the names of the 2030 full moons mean:
- Wolf Moon: Wolves were heard howling more often in midwinter.
- Snow Moon: February is often the snowiest month in North America.
- Worm Moon: Earthworms reappear as the soil thaws and warms.
- Pink Moon: Moss pink (creeping phlox), an early spring wildflower, comes into bloom.
- Flower Moon: Flowers bloom in abundance.
- Strawberry Moon: Wild strawberries ripen and are ready to gather.
- Buck Moon: The antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full growth.
- Sturgeon Moon: Lake sturgeon were most easily caught in late summer.
- Harvest Moon: The full moon closest to the September equinox; around it the Moon rises soon after sunset for several evenings in a row, extending light for harvest work.
- Hunter's Moon: Game animals have fattened for winter, the season for hunting and storing food.
- Beaver Moon: Beavers finish their winter preparations and retreat into their lodges.
- Cold Moon: Winter cold sets in and nights are at their longest.
Frequently asked questions
Why does 2030 have 12 full moons?
A lunar cycle averages 29.53 days, so 12 cycles take about 354 days, 11 days less than a calendar year. A year gets a 13th full moon only when its first full moon falls within about the first 11 days of January. In 2030 the first full moon comes later than that.
How many days are there between full moons in 2030?
The average is 29.53 days, but the gap varies because the Moon's orbit is elliptical. In 2030 the shortest gap between two full moons is 29 days 7 hours (Flower Moon to Strawberry Moon) and the longest 29 days 19 hours (Beaver Moon to Cold Moon).
When is the next blue moon after 2030?
The next blue moon in the calendar-month sense after 2030 is on Tuesday, September 30, 2031. The next seasonal blue moon is on Friday, August 20, 2032.
